You wish to become a real Parisian, at least for a little while? Or maybe just do business while enjoying all facilities the City of Lights has to offer? Here are some facts which may prove quite useful to make the best of your stay in the French capital.
"Paris intra-muros" is clearly distinct from the suburbs, which by European standards are extensive enough, the city possesses more than just one center. Paris' original core is located on two islands, the Île de la Cité (on which Notre-Dame Cathedral stands) and the Île Saint-Louis, but some of its most emblematic sights like the Champs-Elysées are former outskirts of the city.
With more than 2 million inhabitants living in the city proper ("intra-muros", 105 sq. km), Paris is rather crowded. There are nearly no houses but apartment buildings, a lot of them built in the 19th century. Townhouses, called Hotels Particuliers, do exist, but few are still privately-owned today. Living in Paris is seen as a kind of luxury, yet the North and the East are home to a more low-income and ethnically mixed population. Students and young adults attracted by career opportunities make the city's nightlife vibrant and original.
What city could claim to attract more tourists than Paris? As a result of that, accommodations are rather cramped and expensive. Paris still has its top-class (sky-high-priced) hotels, 1900 style, but the International standard hotel chains hosting seminars and business meetings are mostly in the suburbs.
