The wealthy and residential West takes pride in hosting the "most beautiful avenue in the world", the Champs-Elysées, complete with its Arc of Triumph. Across the River Seine, on the Left Bank, stands the Eiffel Tower. Napoleon is buried at the Invalides.
In the north of Paris, the hill or "butte" of Montmartre is topped by the church of the Sacré-Coeur. Besides the medieval center around Notre-Dame, the heart of the Left Bank is home to an amazing number of sights (see The Left Bank Experience).
Paris offers world famous museums like the Musée du Louvre, which specializes in Classical Art and Archeology collections (including the much celebrated Egyptian section), the Musée d'Orsay, displaying paintings from the 19th Century (including the Impressionists and Van Gogh), and the Centre Pompidou (Beaubourg) for Modern and Contemporary art. Of course, apart from this "heavyweight category", there are many, many more compelling museums for you to explore.
Paris also holds a world record for its density of cinemas. While major theater venues can be found at Odéon and near Chatelet-les Halles, the 19th Century Opéra Garnier is situated in the neighborhood known as...Opera, today mostly the venue of ballets. The most prestigious opera performances now take place at the Opéra-Bastille.
In recent years, the Bastille neighborhood has actually become renowned for its nightlife, with many bars and clubs. The life of the gay community more or less revolves around the Quartier du Marais. And yes, busloads of tourists keep looking for (not so cheap) thrills in the streets of Pigalle at the bottom of Montmartre, in the shadow of the Moulin Rouge.
